Despite a tight and interesting start, The Reach never seems likely (or able) to raise itself above its Firestarter-lite aspirations. Kenyon has some ability, especially in creating core characters, but there are too many undeveloped and quickly - and poorly - resolved subplots here, each of them of little interest to the reader as well as - plainly - the writer. They only serve to unbalance the book from its dull and predictable story (plot would be too strong a word) and show a writer unsure of his intentions and ability.
