“Ivan Stang founded the Church of the SubGenius with Dr. Philo Drummond (who is now a DJ on the popular Berkeley radio show Puzzling Evidence) in 1980 with a satyrical pamphlet titled “SubGenius Pamphlet #1.” What’s formed in the 30 years following is an entire parody religion that, while no less real than any other religion, is thankfully only taken seriously to a dangerous level by a small chunk of people. Most followers of the Church of the SubGenius are such because of the humorous and lighthearted nature of the way it satirizes fanatic-based religion, conspiracy theories, and aliens.”
New World Manifesto, Episode 6: Reverend Ivan Stang & the Church of the SubGenius (by NewWorldManifesto)
Join the Church of the SubGenius. Eternal salvation or TRIPLE your money back!
We found a modern-day huckster. His name is Rev. Ivan Stang and he’s the co-founder of a cult called The Church of the SubGenius. Its members worship a pipe smoking man god named Bob Dobbs and claim to be a superior race descended from the Yeti. Their theology is summed up in one word; “Slack.”
“If Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea had not written the Illuminatus! trilogy, there might still be a Church of the SubGenius, but we probably wouldn’t get it.
“All SubGeniuses, Dr. Philo Drummond and myself in particular, owe Pope Bob big time, and we’ve never made any bones about that. He and Shea gave us the broad view of conspiracy theories that is required for any understanding of what we call The Conspiracy. RAW’s seemingly countless other books also served to remind us that while we are indeed crazy, the so-called “normal” people are even crazier…”
Church of the SubGenius Hour of Slack #1310 — May 21 End of the World Special (live 5-22-11) plus AGENT Pt. 5 Harold Camping and his July-5-Deniers suffered only their SECOND wrong end-of-days prediction the day before this was recorded. What AMATEURS! We’ve been having End-of-the-World parties annually on July 5 for 15 YEARS. Needless to say, we have a more mature perspective — for a bunch of professional MOCKERS. The show starts and ends with truly ancient (1980) SubGenius recordings (including our very FIRST TIME on any radio show), plus a little 1970 Firesign Theatre. Stang reads THE AGENT AND MR. DOBBS by Rev. Teeters LaVerge (Part 5 of 7) and then Lonesome Cowboy Dave calls in to join Stang and Wei in discussing false prophets, upcoming devivals, the general vanishing of Stang’s Texas accent, and other subjects of dire importance in the modern world. The rocker “Nature — I Hate It” by The Swingin’ Love Corpses climaxes the show
Church of the SubGenius Hour of Slack #1307 - Audiobook: The Agent and Mr. Dobbs Pt. 1 (Live May 1, ‘11) After a mere 10 minutes of collages and fellow Show-mongers (Puzzling Evidence, Susie the Floozie, Firesign Theatre), Stang reads Part One of Rev. Teeters LaVerge’s ongoing report/short story, “The Agent and Mr. Dobbs.” Rev. Angry Larry covers DEVO (SubG-style) and then Lonesome Cowboy Dave calls in to discuss his tumor, the theft of his thunder, his cousin’s panties, Princess Wei’s tail, modern health care, “Bob,” and The Conspiracy. Stang reads a revised, updated version of Martin Niemoller’s “Then They Came For The …” and reveals secrets of Doktors 4 “Bob.” Part 2 of Onan Canobite’s classic “B.O.B.” closes the show. We will attempt to read the rest of “The Agent and Mister Dobbs” on subsequent shows, because it gets better and better. (Teeters has translated and delivered up to Part 6.)
Church of the SubGenius HOUR OF SLACK #1303 - Rerun of #553 (1996) - Stang Fail / Christian Bashing We are having a busy week so we picked a rerun that has been begging for 15 years to be reran. The first half is mostly a prime excerpt from the Chas-Stang-Dave ESO Swamp Radio shows of the ’90s, an improvised mini-play in which SubGenius scribe Stang goes from being welcomed into the Conspiracy of the Rich to bumming wine money from Dave. The second half is largely from the Columbus 1996 devival, with a heartfelt anti-Christian rant by Rev. Steve Slack. It’s all punctuated by some well-chopped Christian anti-drug praying and two songs by My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult. There is even a mini-rant by Rev. Jesus of the Church of the SubGenius.
Church of the SubGenius Hour of Slack #1283 - 13X-Day Finale: July 5, 7 a.m. Mega-Edit Some weeks, this show is just thrown together. But this is one of those episodes for which we started gathering clips months ago, and for which much ass was busted in editing. It’s our annual “7 a.m. July 5” show, the culmination of all our expectations (and uncannily apt sound bites from other media) regarding “Bob’s” Promise of X-Day — and the subsequent let-down or encouragement, depending on how one sees it. We let the Internet version of this show go on longer than an hour; the censored broadcast version is just under 1 hour and lacks the three profanity-based cuts at the end. Music by 6 Fisted Tails of Connie, Munky Hyv, and Xandy Smith. Main voices are Dr. Hal, Dr. Philo Drummond, and Rev. Stang. (Note: LOST fanatics will get a kick out of the climax.)
Church of the SubGenius Hour of Slack #1282 - Live 11-7-2010: Religious Pledge Drive Steamroller
We were sent several mysterious and, it turns out, wonderful CDs from new contributors, and (for starts) these various Sons of Negativland form a nifty background for our annual pledge drive show for WCSB-Cleveland. Even after the pledge drive has ended in Cleveland, even if the sorry excuses for listeners have no intention of pledging, the ranting, collages and music in the episode will be better than they deserve. Only the Great Ones who contributed are worthy to hear this; and yet, we allow the rest to hear it anyway. Stang goes completely apeshit in the last half. But remember — until you pledge, you’re just eavesdropping.
Online credit card pledges can be made at http://wcsb.org; the phone number until Nov. 14 is 216-687-6900. (We removed the full number and other details to prevent confusion when this is heard on other stations besides WCSB.)
Church of the SubGenius Hour of Slack #1280 - Great New Music by Various SubGenius Artists.
I, Stang got busy with my online SubGenius History/Cult-Running class this week, and we suddenly came into a lot of really great, previously unreleased music, so this is one of those “Sons of Zappa” mostly-music shows that we produce now and then. LeMur, The Large, Sudasana, SlanderBob, and Mr. Rection provided many collages, and our frequent caller Bernard is represented, but mainly it’s a new/old Rudy Schwartz Project album — new to Hour of Slack anyway — and an incredible CD by some folks we met last X-Day Drill, who assemble ear-ripping music under the name RAINBOW. Consortium of Genius also has a new CD out, with a hymn to Cthulhu on it (with guest SubGenius vocals); Rev. Bleepo Abernathy did a beautiful “Beautiful World” cover; and we nabbed two songs from the movie satire about rock stardom, “Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story.” WARNING: after you hear this show, at least one of these songs will be stucking looping in your head as the worst brainworm you’ve ever had.
Church of the SubGenius Hour of Slack #1278 - Leftovers of Involuntary Slack
This episode has a little bit of everything: new music and old (DEVO, Rudy Schwartz Project, Jonathan Coulton, Many Fisted Tails of Connie and St. N and Helena Handbasket), a zillion new collages by Fernandinande LeMur, and bits from unheard SubGenius radio: Dr. Sinister’s RADIO SYNESTHESIA, old ESO Swamp Radio with Lonesome Cowboy Dave, 13X-Day live radio with Dr. Philo Drummond, Dr. Hal, Rev. Susie the Floozie and Rev. Ivan Stang. And then there’s also a mess of other weird stuff.
Church of the SubGenius Hour of Slack #1277 - Live, Oct. 3 2010 - Rachel Maddow Meets “Bob”
Only a small part of this involves Rachel Maddow’s TV report involving the Church of the SubGenius. There’s music (Rudy Schwartz Project, Jonathan Coulton, Many Fisted Tails of Connie, and Xandy Smith (the actual son of Rev. Stang)), many fine LeMurian collages, Puzzling Evidence, The Large, and a lot of verbiage by Lonesome Cowboy Dave. Host Rev. Stang reviews the movie, MONSTERS, but otherwise, the subject matter is all over the place and off the charts. To tell the truth we can’t remember and haven’t listened back. We’re getting ready for the NYC SubGenius show.
Church of the Subgenius Hour of Slack #1276 - Reality Cross-Section (13X-Day Special #5).
From which direction will the Conspiracy attack? How did SubGeniuses cause so many major wars to be lost? How does an amoeba feel when Rev. Stang is poking it with a needle while watching through a microscope? Will “Bob” Dobbs ALWAYS have customers? Should rich assholes be shown any mercy? All of these questions are answered in live stage radio shows from 13 X-Day Drill. Also: a blazing sermon by Rev. Frotis Pshaw (of Munky Hyv) and cookin’ SubGenius hymns from The Mutant Mountain Boys, Many Fisted Tales of Connie, The Devos, and Rev. Tommy Amoeba, the Lowest Form of Life. LeMur and The Large independently handle the collage requirements.
Church of the SubGenius Hour of Slack #1275 - 13X-Day Special #4: Mutants Vs. Normals
This episode sports 46 separate tracks, many of them from a live stage Hour of Slack at 13X-Day with Dr. Hal, Dr. Philo Drummond, Pope David Lee Black and Rev. Ivan Stang, and some from the best live music of 13X-Day, including a firey Munky Hyv segment. We also proudly premiere a moving new bluegrass “Bob” hymn by The Mutant Mountain Boys, a disturbing song by the son of Stang, and a fistful of collages by The Large, Fernandinande LeMur, Heart Ignition and others. But the real headline act of this episode is author Rev. Ramona Back It On Up 13 reading one of her famous Fairy Tale Friday stories. SubGeniuses go head over heels for her naughty but heady metaphorical parables.
